Bristol City Council and the National Landlords Association have invited local private property leasers to attend a seminar designed to raise awareness of the new landlord licensing proposals.
Julie Rigg, the author of the private rentals sector review which prompted the proposed initiatives, will be addressing landlords at the Council House in Bristol's College Green to discuss the possible legal repercussions of the new regulations.
If implemented, the scheme would involve the listing of all private landlords on a national register, with fees to be paid annually and harsh penalties to be imposed should members be found to have fallen below accepted standards.
Authorities are increasingly looking to strengthen the laws monitoring landlord activities, with the London Borough of Hounslow recently extending local licensing regulations to include a wider range of property owners.
However, bodies such as the British Property Federation (BPF) have expressed doubts about the national register initiative, with BPF telling the Local Government Chronicle last month that it felt the scheme would not function without greater council support.
