Branded rental market 'may not be suited to UK'

The implementation of a US-style rental market in Britain could be problematic, as it would not be tailored to serve the UK market's "specific needs and circumstances".

That is the opinion of the NLA, which asserted today (Friday, May 2nd) that the countries' markets are quite dissimilar, meaning that calls to introduce a branded rental market following the US example should be viewed cautiously.

David Salusbury, chairman of the NLA, warned that the commoditisation of housing in Britain may not serve to benefit the more vulnerable consumers, asserting that a diverse rental market should be encouraged.

He commented: "We should be wary of calls to mirror the US housing market here in the UK, especially since there are few similarities and the US housing market is suffering considerably.

"We need to focus on developing the UK rental market around its own specific needs and circumstances."
