Bradford council has announced an amnesty for landlords who rent out shared houses but do not have the correct licence.

Since the introduction of new regulations, landlords who have homes on multiple occupation are obliged to be licensed by the council.

To encourage greater compliance with the ruling, the council has confirmed that for the next two months landlords who do not have the appropriate clearance but who apply for a licence will face no censure.

After this point the council pledges to prosecute those who do not comply, and before the announcement of the amnesty recently pursued two landlords who were fined £1,200 and £1,600.

Councillor Adrian Naylor, executive member for regeneration, told the Bradford Telegraph and Argus: "We have declared an amnesty because it may be possible that landlords are not aware that they have to have a licence to operate a housein multiple occupation.

"However, after October there really is no excuse and we will come down hard on those who continue to operate without a licence. It is not fair on those landlords who have complied with the law, and tenants who do not have the security of living in a licensed home."

Rental accommodation which is covered by the regulations is that which have three or more floors and are occupied by five or more separate tenants.
