The British Property Federation (BPF) has published new guidance to help landlords and letting agents to remain legally compliant with the government's new Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) regulations.
Landlords will be advised on their specific responsibilities under the CRC laws, a mandatory scheme which will levy payments for properties based on their energy consumption.
The BPF report also criticised the government for the manner of the introduction of the capping scheme, stating that the objectives and implementation of the scheme have not been made sufficiently clear to those affected.
Liz Peace, BPF's chief executive, said: "The property industry is fully behind moves to cut emissions, but the scheme has not been properly thought through. Large areas of uncertainty remain over how you apply the CRC around existing leases."
Last week, the BPF welcomed a proposal by the Homes and Communities Agency to stimulate the domestic rentals sector with investment from UK pension and overseas funds.
