Boilers should be checked regularly

It is "very important" for homeowners, including landlords, to check their boiler regularly.

That is according to Julian Mears, a spokesman for British Gas, who said that how often a boiler should be checked depended on how old it was.

He noted that newer boilers did not need to be checked as regularly because they tended to be more energy efficient and hence cleaner.

Mr Mears commented: "The older your boiler the more regularly we'd advise you to have it checked. The newer it is, the less frequently it needs to be checked."

He went on to say that homeowners should ensure that they had a qualified technician check their boiler.

He advised: "It's always best to let experts take the decisions to whether or not something is safe or otherwise. We wouldn’t advise people to diagnose the health of their boiler on their own.

"It's what people pay us to do so people should leave it to the experts."
