Banned estate agent 'able to continue being a landlord'

News Category: Legal

This article was brought to you by Rentman the premium rent management software.

A man who has been banned from being an estate agent will be able to continue acting as a private landlord.

Peter Hall from Middlesbrough has had his credit licence revoked by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), but will be able to set himself up as a letting agent due to the lack of regulation in the industry, reports Introducer Today.

Mr Hall's licence was revoked after the OFT learned about his extensive criminal record.

As a result, he has been banned under the Estate Agents Act, but there is no equivalent piece of legislation relating to letting agents or private landlords.

Mr Hall - a former boxer - has 23 convictions and currently has an Asbo and is thought to have as many as 200 properties under his control.

Christopher Hamer, the Property Ombudsman, previously expressed his disappointment that the government has decided to scrap proposed regulation for letting agents.
