The Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) has welcomed an independent review of the private rented sector.
Housing minister Yvette Cooper has said that the review will look at more and better options for the sector.
However, the association has called for special attention to be given to issues of "licensing for all agents and independent redress for the consumer". As well as this, it would welcome letting agents being covered by the latest money laundering regulations.
ARLA has appealed to various governments to introduce compulsory licensing for all letting agents and to bring in compulsory independent redress.
"While the professional bodies can ensure that their own member agents are compliant with best practice, safeguard their clients' money and abide by a disciplinary code, too many letting agents operate without any experience or any system designed toprotect either themselves and the public," said ARLA head of operations Ian Potter.
