Arla calls for further clarification over repossession laws

Arla has called for the government to rethink its new guidelines on the repossession of rented property.

The letting agents association has questioned new proposals which would seek to notify tenants of repossession-threatened landlords up to seven weeks in advance of hearing dates.

Arla claims the initiative could encourage tenants to seek new landlords too early, thereby causing a contract violation if the repossession order is not subsequently granted.

Lucy Morton, president of Arla, also called on the government to be clearer about its intentions to implement the schemes into law.

She said: "The government's pledge to legislate at 'the next opportunity' is far too vague, as both landlords and tenants need the government to take action now rather than making promises."

Earlier this week, the National Landlords Association reminded those operating in the sale and rent back market to ensure they are registered and legally compliant with newly-implemented regulations in the sector.
