Arla backs regulation in rental sector

Recommendations issued to the government advising more regulation in the private rental sector have been welcomed by the Association of Residential Letting Agents (Arla).

Ian Potter, head of operations at the body, said that more government support is needed within the rental market and said real estate investment trusts are unable to satisfy the needs of the residential sector.

The Rugg Review's call for licensing across the lettings market is a move that has been supported by Arla for the last decade, he added.

Mr Potter said the group hopes that improved governmental assistance for the private rental sector will lead to changes in the fiscal regime available to landlords.

"The private rented sector has been well served by the small landlord," he continued.

"Without this backbone, the sector would never have been revitalised and the housing market would be having even more problems," he said.

Meanwhile, the British Property Federation has urged landlords and letting agents to effectively develop and manage their portfolios because more potential homebuyers are opting for renting as a result of the economic downturn.
