Worsening affordability means that an increasing number of university graduates are having to rent rather than buy their own home.
Figures from insurer Scottish Widows indicate that only 44 per cent of graduates have managed to buy their first property within ten years of leaving higher education, leaving a large proportion to rent their houses.
As well as this, almost three-quarters are led to buy together with family or friends, but this can sometimes be a shaky arrangement.
Warned Scottish Widows Bank communications manager Amanda Docherty: "This is not an arrangement that people should rush into. Nobody wants to end up in a situation where they find it extremely difficult to share a home with someone they no longer get on with but can't afford to do anything about it.
"With no exit route in place, graduates need to be fully aware of the size of the commitment involved in buying with someone else."
