Accidental landlord trend 'to continue'

The rise in accidental landlords is a trend that is set to continue, according to one property expert.

Steve Lees, head of marketing at online estate agent network email4property.co.uk, said there are an increasing number of people deciding to rent out their home, rather than sell it for an unsuitable price.

Mr Lees also suggested that new landlords must seek the help of letting agents.

"With an array of responsibilities and regulations that must be adhered to, entering into the lettings market is not a decision that should be taken lightly," he warned. "For those with limited experience, hiring a lettings agent is a must."

Last month, the Association of Residential Letting Agents said it was concerned by the number of estate agents switching to the private rented sector.

It claimed that there are some unregulated estate agents who have made the move to lettings due to the economic downturn and the lack of activity in house sales.
